Do you think these are good monologues...? 7 months 1 week ago #6903

OK, so I'm auditioning for multiple Shakespeare companies in a few weeks. The monologues I'm thinking of doing are Portia's speech that starts with "Away then, I am locked in one of them" (it's just before Bassanio is choosing on of the boxes), and Beatrice's short speech that begins with "What fire is in mine ears". The total time of the audition can't be over 2 minutes so I want to be careful.

I did Portia's "quality of mercy" speech last year so that's why I'm a little hesitant to do another speech of hers but it seems that it's not done very often.

I don't know, what are your thoughts?

I have a personal bias towards Beatrice's speech. It's a high-energy speech and, if done well, can beautifully carry the listener's ear.

In an audition setting, Portia's "quality of mercy" speech is done quite a lot.
