TOPIC: Does each generation need its own Romeo and Juliet?

Does each generation need its own Romeo and Juliet? 6 years 5 days ago #1976

Recently I looked at available film versions of Romeo and Juliet, and noticed that the two most recent major Hollywood releases are a generation apart:

Franco Zeffirelli's version with a (very) young Olivia Hussey (1968), and Baz Luhrmann's version with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio (1996).

This raises the question, does each generation need its own interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, and what does each interpretation say about its generation?
