Garrick Huscared -- Shakespearean, artist, gentleman and visionary -- passed away this past December.

Garrick was a brilliant artist whose Shakespeare-inspired paintings garnered a deeply devoted following, a man of style who marched down the streets of Stratford-upon-Avon dressed in the full regalia of a gentleman of Shakespeare's time, including both swords and pomander. He was a gentleman in the fullest sense of the time, and the kindest of men.

His enthusiasm for Shakespeare was infectious, and he never buckled under the slights of fortune, however long he yearned for the opportunity to created the massive sculpture of Antony Sher as Richard III that he envisioned. Whatever disappointment this may have brought him, his last years (during which he battled pancreatic cancer with a rare courage and kept it at bay longer than anyone could expect) were heightened by his being chosen as the sculptor for the new bust of Shakespeae based on the Cobbe portrait.

I speak from experience (both my own, and that of witnessing the reaction of those who have had the privilege of stepping back and witnessing Garrick's work) when I say that his artwork earned a consistent admiration that is rare for modern artists, an admiration that ever acknowledged the unquieness of his vision.

Tonight in remembrance I raise a glass to his name, and invite you all to do the same.
