Falstaff Awards

PlayShakespeare.com is pleased to announce the nominees and winners for the annual Falstaff Awards for 2007. With PlayShakespeare.com's international reach, reviewers worldwide have come together to honor the best in Shakespeare for the year of 2007. The Falstaff Awards recognize extraordinary achievement in the areas of Best Play, Best Director, Best Performance by a Male or Female Actor, among other performance and technical categories.

This year's winners include Sir Ian McKellen for his performance in the Royal Shakespeare Company's King Lear and Rupert Goold for his direction of Macbeth starring Partick Stewart.

The Falstaff Awards honor the DVD release of Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet as the Best Film/DVD of 2007. This long-awaited special edition release gave Shakespeare aficionados what they'd long clamored for, and more.

Also honored was the new edition of the RSC Complete Works by editors Jonathan Bate and Eric Rasmussen. Taking a bold stance behind the First Folio, this tome made a stronger case than any other publication to date.

Of note is the Lear Award for Lifetime Achievement was awarded to William Hutt in recognition of his lifelong contribution to Shakespeare performance. Mr. Hutt was slated to perform in Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (after 39 seasons) but withdrew in March 2007 because of health concerns. He passed away of leukemia a few months later at the age of 87.
