Falstaff Awards for Excellence in Shakespeare

PlayShakespeare.com is pleased to announce the nominees and winners for the annual Falstaff Awards for 2009. With PlayShakespeare.com's international reach, reviewers worldwide have come together to honor the best in Shakespeare for the year of 2009. The Falstaff Awards recognize extraordinary achievement in the areas of Best Play, Best Director, Best Performance by a Male or Female Actor, among other performance and technical categories.

This year's winners include Jude Law for his performance in the Donmar's production of Hamlet on Broadway and Sam Mendes for his direction of The Winter's Tale starring Simon Russell Beale and Sinéad Cusack.

The Falstaff Awards honor the DVD release of Playing Shakespeare as the Best Film/DVD of 2009. This long-awaited release gave Shakespeare aficionados what they'd long clamored for, and more—whether or not they had seen the original 1984 versions on VHS.

Also honored was the newly released Shakespeare Encyclopedia by editor A. D. Cousins. A visually sumptuous edition of Shakespeare's life and works make this compendium accessible to all audiences.

Of note is the Lear Award for Lifetime Achievement was awarded to Patrick Stewart in recognition of his lifelong contribution to Shakespeare performance. Last year, Stewart performed the role of Claudius opposite David Tennant in Hamlet at the Royal Shakespeare Company and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
