KEEP CUTTING BALL ROLLING!

cbt.closing

Cutting Ball Theater faces possible closure due to dwindling funding landscape for theater in the wake of the pandemic, despite efforts to apply for more grants than ever and seeing inspiring ticket sales. As one of the last arts organizations in the Tenderloin, we emphasize the importance of preserving radical, experimental art and are seeking community support to raise $200,000 by June to sustain operations and continue producing experimental works.

NEXT UP: THE SOUL NEVER DWELLS IN A DRY PLACE

MARCH 22 - 24
THE SOUL NEVER DWELLS IN A DRY PLACE
by Rotimi Agbabiaka  \  directed by Edris Cooper  \  inspired by the work of Romare Bearden

The Soul Never Dwells in A Dry Place uses theatrical collage to tell the story of a young black curator, newly hired by a major American museum to mount a retrospective of 1960s artist Romare Bearden. As he struggles to fit Bearden’s boundary breaking work into contemporary categories, he is visited by the ghosts of Bearden’s influences.

From North Carolina folklore to Chinese calligraphy, Greek mythology to the Harlem Renaissance, Jazz music to the Dutch masters, African sculpture to French impressionists, The Soul Never Dwells In A Dry Place goes on the kaleidoscopic journey of a person trying to find their place in a world that transcends categorization.

Cutting Ball Theater is canceling portions of the March 22nd-March 24th workshop performances of A Soul Never Dwells In A Dry Place due to unforeseen events. These circumstances were complex in nature and despite all of our best efforts, we are unable to continue forward as planned.

Instead of actor-performed material, we will be offering a paper collage workshop on Saturday March 23rd from 7pm-8pm inspired by Romare Bearden, and a community event on Sunday from 2pm-3pm hosted by playwright Rotimi Agbabiaka.

Saturday’s Creativity Workshop will be led by CBT’s Community and Education Director, Cathryn Cooper, with free admission and is aimed at inviting audiences to partake in the creation of multimedia art and discuss the core messaging of SOUL.

Sunday’s event will be hosted by Rotimi Agbabiaka where Rotimi discusses the play and shares a few excerpts from the script.

We apologize for this late notification and continue to thank you for your support of our theater.

THESE ARE FREE EVENTS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!

At CBT we understand that one of our greatest resources is our space and we want to make it available for community members to use it in our season's dark spots. Whether it be for a business meeting, actor rehearsal, community gathering, and more, we want our neighbors to have access to this space. We provide Wifi, bathrooms, printers, tables, and more. Space is available by application only.

CREATIVITY closet

One way to utilize our CB Commons space is with our Creativity Closet. This is a year-round FREE service offering artists and Tenderloin community members access to the space and art supplies free of charge.
