The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (CSC) is dedicated to bringing the plays of Shakespeare and other classic playwrights into the lives of as many people as possible in ways that are personally meaningful, educationally inspiring, and theatrically compelling. We pursue artistic excellence, ensure accessibility, and promote regional awareness of classic theatre. Our mission is to engage our communities in the exploration of what makes Shakespeare so timeless and relevant while strengthening the connection between audience and artist.
Born in 2002 with the goal to produce “Shakespeare that’s not stuffy”, and empowered by a talented group of artists, a skillful and experienced management team, and a community that became rapidly engaged, CSC quickly grew into a regional voice for new approaches to classic theater. Now centrally located in downtown Baltimore, housed in the Mercantile Safe Deposit and Trust Company building just two blocks north of the Inner Harbor, CSC serves more than 25,000 people annually through artistic, education, and outreach programs including a complete indoor season (5-7 productions), an outdoor season (1-2 productions), and a vibrant Education and Outreach program with both in-school and out-of-school activities for youth, and professional development opportunities for artists, teachers, and the public at large.
