In case you haven't yet noticed, you can get the complete works on your iPhone for free. They are the same editions that are on this site.

(iTunes required to download)

If you have an iPhone, please download it and give us feedback. Thanks!

There has been an extraordinarily positive response to this application - 60 comments so far (as of today) - most very, very pleased to have the canon of plays in their pocket. Some complaints about awkward scrolling, lack of bookmarking, and the inability to search for a phrase or word - there was only one argument (that I saw) against the use of moderized text and punctuation.

Most people were amazed that there was no charge for this fantastic app.

Yep... there's an update to the original announcement here:

https://www.playshakespeare.com/news/3634-playshakespeare-now-free-on-iphone-itunes

There are some scrolling issues, which is the only real bug. That's been fixed though and an update sent to Apple. Unfortunately, they take so long for review before the iTunes store is updated.

We're addressing the rest of the comments (we were going to anyway, but this confirms our original plans) by adding search, notes, & bookmarks. The new version will be available some time in August (again depending on Apple's speed....or lack thereof).

One guy complained that the texts were not all First Folio (God knows why...just "folio snobbery";). We'd have to leave out the sonnets, Edward III, Pericles and Two Noble Kinsmen. We may consider adding FF versions to the application (they're already on this site), but it's not crucial at all. The list of sources for the plays on this site is available here:

Another person says we should change the icon because the Scientific American "proved" that our logo (the Hall portrait) was Queen Elizabeth. Naturally, this person is ill informed and just trying to be a know-it-all.

Like this site, the application will always be free of charge. Since all the other books on iTunes are at least .99, the complete works in your pocket is a helluva deal. :)
Another Shakespeare upon the iPhone fan...

This is the coolest iPhone app that I have. It's not the one I use most, but I've been wanting something like this forever. A couple years back when I first got my ipod video and discovered that I could store text on it I was trying to find ways to put some of Shakespeare's plays on it. It was kind of a hassle. With the iPhone there was, at first, no "legal" way to transfer large text files to the phone. After the software update and the app store, I thought it would now be possible. But before I could even think about doing anything... you guys come out with a free app that puts the complete works in my pocket. WHOOHOO!
Glad you like the app. Now that the plays have been converted to XML, we're hard at work on the XML reader in the next version of the application. There will also be some other goodies in there and when the new iPhone OS arrives this summer, there will be a groundbreaking new feature that is going to take performing Shakespeare to a new level. Stay tuned!
