I would like to know (evidence optional but valued) the original date/place of performance - and supposed audience.

It is usually assumed to be written around 1605-06, although the first definite record of it is a summary citing a 1611 performance. It is often mentioned that the play may well have been written for the occasion of the Danish King Christian IV's 1606 visit to the court of King James I. The audience would then have been two kings and their immediate courtiers.

Thank you - confirmation of my usual view (needed confirmation!).

Anybody know of a supposed earlier performance in Oxford?
