Yesterday my wife and I saw a terrific performance of "The Merchant of Venice" by our local Shakespeare troupe, "The Hudson River Shakespeare Company." The staging was simple, even sparse, but the performances riveting. Kudos to the director Andrew Daly and his cast! Would that every community have such a troupe.

Whilst I won't get the chance to see it - I have to say that it is frequently the simpler performances which are the most 'riveting'.
Another source of good Shakespeare (at least in the UK) is the school performance.
