Hi there,
I am trying to track down the copyright of the live filmed performance of Henry IV parts 1 and 2 which was done at the Grand Theatre, Swansea in 1990. It was released on VHS, dir Michael Bogdanov - Portman Classics Productions in conjunction with Windmill Road... Portman Classics are a book publisher, no? I am sure one of you can point me in the right direction.... I want to use a clip in a television documentary - I will no doubt find out more info when I look at the box the vhs will be in, but I thought I would ask the forum for good measure.

Many thanks.

Victoria Stable.

This is the info that's on the film:

www.worldcat.org/title/king-henry-iv-part-i/oclc/030805089

Portman Classics has been officially dissolved a long time ago:

opencorporates.com/companies/gb/02351004
data.companieshouse.gov.uk/doc/company/02351004

I'd bet that the copyright reverts to the English Shakespeare Company, but they no longer exist as well. In the US, one could make the case that a work falls into the public domain if there's no "owner" or the copyright has expired (or if the production was sponsored with public funding). This very well could be one of those cases where nobody has pursued a legal interest in the ownership.

Dear Ron Severdia,

Thanks so much for those links - they will be very useful as we can do an 'await claim' and see if anyone does just that. We can pay Equity fees to the actors as they are identifiable - and just wait and see re the copyright.

Many thanks again for your research. Do you think I should post the query anywhere else on the site?

regards,

Victoria Stable.

Glad to help. I don't think you need to post anywhere else. Let's see if anyone else comes up with any more info.
