We're now undertaking a new project of converting the works of Shakespeare from the First Folio into XML format. For more information, see our news posting here:

http://www.playshakespeare.com/news/375 ... o-editions

The goal is to have an original spelling edition similar to the Norton Facsimile:

http://www.amazon.com/First-Folio-Shake ... 103&sr=8-1

That means that the u/v and i/j combinations remain as in the original First Folio. The "long s" (which looks like an F) should remain and be represented by this code to correctly appear in XML: ſ

Other special/foreign letters can be found here:

http://www.ascii.cl/htmlcodes.htm

For information on how to convert a play to XML, see this post from our Complete Works Conversion Project:

Compare your work to any of the online editions of the First Folio:

Hi,

We're still looking for folks to help with verifying XML files. This means reading the text and comparing it to a print facsimile of the FF. Anyone out there with some time on their hands?

Thanks!

Thanks, tjDawg! I'll Email you the XML. The last step in this process is comparing each XML file to a print version of the First Folio. The most important thing is that all the spelling matches. We've run some automated scripts to take care of most of the stuff, but some final checking is needed.

To edit the XML file, all you need is a text editor. There are a number of free XML editors out there as well so it's just a question of what you prefer. Most browsers will read the XML file (Included is also a CSS file to make it easier to read) so just drop it into a browser to view the play. I'd recommend having that same XML open in your text editor so you can immediately make changes without any back-and-forth.

Feel free to post any questions you might have during the process here.

I'm happy to update this post with the latest information that version 3 of the PlayShakespeare.com editions of the complete works in XML is approaching completion. It should be complete in the next week or so and will be available in our library (the previous editions are there now).

Around the same time these editions will be available, we also will have the complete First Folio in XML. This also includes quarto versions of the following:

Edward III
Sonnets
Lover's Complaint
Passionate Pilgrim
Phoenix and Turtle
Rape of Lucrece
Two Noble Kinsmen
Venus and Adonis

The Third Folio of Pericles will be included as well as the manuscript editions of Sir Thomas More and To the Queen. More info forthcoming.
