Hey all,

I seem to remember reading about surviving Elizabethan documents that refer to (or are thought to refer to) Shakespeare's work in a negative way - contemporary intellectuals trashtalking the Bard in written form.

My professor - who can't fathom anyone ever saying something bad about him - doesn't believe me. So am I crazy?

Not crazy Matt. Just perplexed.

It is not any use in sitting and wondering why, babe.
I have yet to converse with a so-called scholar who will discuss anything other than good, as far as old Shakyboots goes.

I seem to remember some !7th c manuscript or perhaps book thing, slagging Shakespeare off.

I think it had to do with the sexual inuendo. If i can recall, i will let u no.

regards Matt.

I also recall something along these lines but can't remember the specifics...I seem to recall it was a diary of some sort.... If it comes to me, I'll post it...

Matt,

I do not have my copy of this book with me but I have a slight memory of a negative reference along the lines of 'common' or 'cheap' of his work - I think by a competitor. I read this in the recent book on Wil by Bill Bryson (surprisingly decent read). I wish I could provide more details but cannot access my copy to check it up.
