The Earl of Salisbury, of the Yorkist party, is the Earl of Warwick’s father and an old nobleman whose chief care is for the good of the realm.
He at first prefers to support the Duke of Gloucester against the machinations of the Cardinal and Somerset for that reason. He is convinced by York and Warwick’s arguments as to York’s right to the crown, and swears to help bring him to the throne, though that means abandoning Gloucester to his fate. He has the common touch and is able to parley with a mob. Despite his age, he is a fierce fighter. His family crest is a bear chained to a staff.
