Alexander Iden is an esquire of Kent, quite removed from the rebellion, a quiet, unambitious man who merely wishes to live his life in peace and quiet, keeping his wealth up and giving charity to the poor.
He is shocked to find a starving man stealing from his garden, particularly when the man insults him. Though essentially peaceful, Iden will not bear a slur on his honor, and challenges the man to fight. Only after killing him does he discover that his enemy is Cade, and he is delighted to have made an end of the rabble-rouser. He brings Cade’s head to the King and is knighted for the deed.
