Lord Grey is Queen Elizabeth’s son by her previous marriage, ennobled after his mother’s marriage to King Edward.
This leaves him a deep irritant to the traditional nobility, who regard him as an upstart, and to the populace, who resent his pride. He attempts to reassure his mother that they are secure despite the King’s illness. He is one of the lords who go to fetch Prince Edward after the King’s death, on which journey he is arrested on Richard’s orders and soon put to death. He dies well. His ghost returns to haunt Richard before the battle of Bosworth and to bless Richard’s opponent Richmond.
