Original Story 12/20/2008:

Shakespeare Santa Cruz Needs a Pound of Your Flesh

Okay, not exactly your flesh, but your ducats would serve well right about now—$300,000 to be exact.

SSC has until 12:00PM Monday, December 22, 2008, to raise $300,000 in order to keep a much-needed light on in their twenty-seven year old house. Without these funds, SSC will go dark in 2009 and likely forever.

Not even Shakespeare can withstand the effects of our current budget crisis. In the past, SSC received backing from UC Santa Cruz’s Arts Division, but our recessive times led to recessive ticket sales and contributions in 2008, and our current statewide budget crisis has hit state and UC campuses hard. UCSC is no longer able to host SSC due to the potential financial risk in these uncertain times, so the company must embark on a quest for $300,000 in order to present their 2009 season. No ducats, no season.

$278,516 has been raised as of Friday, December 19, but the clock’s urgently ticking. If you’d like to contribute to this worthy cause and help keep good theatre alive and well in Santa Cruz, please offer your donations now, before it’s too late.

Please note: If SSC does not reach its goal of $300,000 by December 22, 2008, your gift will be refunded.
