The First Sheriff is Thomas More’s fellow officer of the law. He is present at the Lifter’s trial.
A gung-ho sort of fellow, he starts hanging the condemned rioters before their reprieve can arrive. Nevertheless, he is willing to do what he can to help their deaths be more pleasant. A good bureaucrat, he is worried about the effect any error of his might have on his city’s reputation. He also does not like long-haired louts such as Faulkner. He is part of More’s escort to the scaffold.
